Does Instagram Tell You When Someone Unfollows You?

Short answer: no. The longer answer explains every unfollower tool ever built.

No. Instagram sends a notification when someone follows you and nothing at all when they stop. Your count changes and there is no record of who.

That single design decision is the reason an entire category of apps exists, and understanding it tells you what those apps can and cannot honestly offer.

What Instagram does and does not record

New followers: Notified, and visible in your activity feed.
Accounts you unfollowed: Recorded. Visible in Your activity and in your data export. See how to see who you unfollowed.
Accounts that unfollowed you: Not recorded anywhere you can reach. Your follower list simply no longer contains them.
Who viewed your profile: Not available to anyone. Apps claiming otherwise are inventing it.

Why the asymmetry

Your own actions are yours to review. Someone else’s decision about you is theirs.

A public unfollow log would also change behaviour. Unfollowing would become a statement rather than a quiet adjustment, people would hesitate, and the follow graph would become a worse reflection of what anyone actually wants to see. Instagram would rather the signal stay honest.

So how do unfollower tools work?

By comparison, without exception. A tool records your follower list today, records it again later, and reports the difference. There is no privileged access involved because there is nothing privileged to access.
