How to Unfollow Everyone on Instagram (and Whether You Should)

A full reset is possible. It is rarely the right call — here is both sides.

Wanting to wipe the following list and start clean is a common impulse, usually after realising it is full of accounts followed for reasons that no longer apply.

It is doable. It is also slower than people expect and often solves the wrong problem.

There is no reset button

Instagram provides no way to unfollow everyone at once, and no setting that clears the list. Every unfollow is an individual action subject to the same rate limits.

Which means "unfollow everyone" is really "unfollow everyone, thirty a day, for as long as that takes". At 1,500 accounts, that is roughly seven weeks.

Why a total wipe is usually wrong

You lose the good with the bad: Friends, accounts you genuinely read, people in your field. Rebuilding that is far more work than pruning was.
Your feed gets worse immediately: Instagram decides what to show you from what you follow and engage with. An empty following list means a feed of algorithmic guesses.
The follower dip is real: Reciprocal followers notice and leave.
It fixes the symptom: If the list got bloated through follow-for-follow, wiping it changes nothing about the habit that filled it.

The version worth doing instead

If you genuinely want a clean slate

Do it slowly and accept the timeline. Do not reach for an app promising to do it overnight — that is the fastest route to a temporary action block, and the block leaves you with a half-finished list and no way to continue.

Consider whether a fresh account is actually the better answer. If the following list is the only thing wrong, prune it. If the whole account no longer represents you, starting over may be cleaner than seven weeks of tapping.
